For Immediate Release – August 22, 2022 — OKLAHOMA CITY – – Tatanka had to survive a five-minute inquiry in the turf allowance feature race Saturday night, but after looking at the replay, the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission stewards determined there wasn’t enough evidence to disqualify the horse from the victory.
Jockey David Cabrera was in the saddle for the win for trainer Bret Calhoun and owners Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch of Dallas. As Tatanka turned for home on the turf course in the 1-1/16th mile race, the 3-year-old gelded son of Goldencents was on the inside of rival Brock on By in the two-path. There was some question as to whether the two horses bumped but the judges ruled there was no hindrance that cost Brock on By the race.
Tatanka, out of the Successful Appeal mare Appealing Cat, finished a half-length up on Brock on By, who was another half-length ahead of third-place finisher Cairo Warrior. The post-time favorite was U S Navy Cross at 5-2 odds and he ran fourth in the contentious race.
Tatanka, bred in Kentucky by Spendthrift Farm, earned the $21,678 purse money for the win and improved his record to seven starts with three wins and $68,718 in his bankroll. He is now three-for-three lifetime over grass and has earned $62,478 on the turf.
Tatanka posted a winning time of 1:42.19 over the firm course and he made every pole a winning one, setting interior fractions of :22.94 for the first quarter-mile, :47.35 for the half-mile, 1:11.84 for three-quarters of a mile and 1:36.15 for the mile. He was sent off at 7-2 odds and returned $9.60 to win, $5.20 to place and $3.80 to show.
WILLIS AND MEDINA DOUBLE ON SATURDAY NIGHT
Trainer Mindy Willis enjoyed the opening Saturday of the Remington Park season, saddling two winner on the night. Both victors won over the turf course. Willis won with Kolkata ($7 to win) in race six and with Truly Danzig ($14.80) in race nine.
Jockey Jose Medina posted a riding double on Saturday, gaining his first victories of the season. Medina found the winner’s circle with late-running Salt Creek Kid ($16.80) in race three. He picked up his second score of the night with High Cost of Livin ($12.80) in race eight.
REMINGTON PARK LEADS NORTH AMERICA IN A PAIR OF CATEGORIES ON OPENING NIGHT FRIDAY
When Rated R Superstar romped home a winner in the $175,000 Governor’s Cup Stakes on Friday night at Remington Park, he put owner Danny Caldwell on top nationally as the owner that won the most earnings for August 19 at $105,000. Caldwell is the all-time winningest owner at this Oklahoma City track with 397 trips to the winner’s circle.
The other category in which Remington Park topped the North American list was with the largest exacta payout of $357.20. It came in Race 2 when Paluxy (6-1) combined with Unrestricted (35-1) for the box-car hit. Paluxy is trained by Bret Calhoun, who has started the meet on fire with wins the first two nights. Karl Broberg, second in the country in wins in 2022 behind only Steve Asmussen, rarely has a 35-1 horse at post-time, but he was the conditioner of Unrestricted. Jockey Richard Eramia rode the winner and Cristian Torres was aboard the runner-up. Asmussen leads Broberg 282-243, according to Equibase statistics.
