OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – August 28, 2026 — Buck Pie was totally ignored by everyone at Remington Park except his jockey, Jose Alvarez. When all was said and done, Alvarez had produced a winner in the colts and geldings division of the $50,000 Oklahoma Stallion Handicap at 57-1 odds. It was the longest odds in a short six-horse field.
“Nobody is more surprised than I am,” said owner-breeder Bryan Hawk of Shawnee, Okla. “We had two horses in the field and I really thought the 6-horse (C W Dazzle) might be the one. Jose just did a great job.”
Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame trainer Joe Offolter trains both C W Dazzle and Buck Pie and he was thinking along the same lines as his owner.
“I did not expect (Buck Pie) to run the way he did,” said Offolter. “Jose rode him perfectly and he told me before the race, ‘there’s a lot of speed in here. I think I’ll just sit back and see what happens in front of us and see what we can do.’ “
What they did was come from dead last in the pack of six horses and flew down the stretch, passing all the fading speed, to draw off to a 3-1/2 length win at seven furlongs on the fast main track.
Buck Pie became the second horse of the night to pay more than $100 to win on a $2 ticket. Buck Pie, a 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelded son of Pass the Buck, from the Candy Ride (ARG) mare Sugar Pie, paid $116.20 to win, $17.60 to place and $5.60 to show, covering the distance in 1:24.14 on the fast track. Earlier in the evening, Connie’scalculator went off at 66-1 and paid $135.40 to win.
Buck Pie rallied into early fractions of :22.68 for the first quarter-mile, :45.88 for the half-mile, and 1:11.17 for three-quarters of a mile. Buck Pie earned $30,000 for the victory and improved to eight starts, three wins, and one second for $63,331 in lifetime earnings. It was his first stakes win, in his first race after more than three months off after running seventh in a handicap at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla., on May 2.
“When I asked him to run at the three-eighths, he began to run and gave me everything he had,” said Alvarez.
It was the first win in the colts and geldings division of the Oklahoma Stallion Handicap for colts/geldings for all the connections. Buck Pie was followed in second by How About Bob (1-5 betting favorite), I Am What I Am (7-2) third, C W Dazzle (7-1) fourth, Flashout (15-1) fifth and Sandthefloor (9-1) sixth.
The Oklahoma Stallion Handicap is restricted to 3-year-old progeny of stallions registered with the Oklahoma Stallion registrar.
Remington Park racing continues Saturday, Aug. 29 with the first race at 6:30pm-Central.
