OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – August 18, 2026 — Miss Code West tied Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Famer Welder for most stakes wins in the history of this track when she won her 11th black-type race here, taking down the $111,000 Oklahoma Classics Distaff Handicap on Friday night.
Miss Code West needed two stakes wins this meet to tie the record and she inched closer, capturing the $50,000 inaugural Shawn Bergquist Memorial Stakes at Remington Park on Sept. 12. The 5-year-old Oklahoma-bred mare by Code West, out of the Kipling mare Inca Miss, is quickly carving a space in the future next to Welder in the Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame. She won for the 12th time at Remington Park, which puts her only four victories behind Welder, who is the all-time winningest horse in the history of the track with 16 trips to the winner’s circle.
Miss Code West is also tied with Welder for most times named Champion Horse of the Meet here with three apiece.
On Friday night, Miss Code West, sent off at 1-9 odds, easily went gate to wire with this bunch of Oklahoma-bred fillies and mares at 1-1/16th miles to win by a length. It appeared she could have won by more as she tends to let her foes come to her in late stretch as a game she plays.
“She likes to let her competition come to her,” said jockey Floyd Wethey, Jr. “She is such a blessing to all of us. This mare always impresses. She will do whatever you want her to do. I just wanted to get the bit in her mouth and then it was up to her.”
It was the fourth Oklahoma Classics win for Miss Code West, trained by Kevin Scholl and owned by Jeffry and Julie Puryear of Denton, Texas. She was bred in Oklahoma by Bryan Hawk. The winning mare won the Oklahoma Classics Lassie as a 2-year-old in 2023 and followed that up with a win in the 2024 Distaff Handicap and then switched to the turf last year for a victory in the 2025 Distaff Turf.
There was a good reason Scholl switched her back to the dirt this year.
“I was just trying to figure out where it would be easier for her to win,” Scholl said.
“I figured there couldn’t be that many dirt horses here that wanted to try her. She just likes her job and that makes my job easier. I give all the glory to God.”
The stakes win for Miss Code West was her seventh in a row since she lost a black-type race here, running second in the $200,000 Remington Park Oaks on Sept. 29, 2024. Wethey broke into double digits in Classics wins with 10, putting him in seventh place all-time among jockeys.
Miss Code West covered the distance in 1:42.12 over the fast track as she set every internal fraction of Distaff. She went the first quarter-mile in :24.75, the half-mile in :48.73, three-quarters in 1:12.85 and the mile in 1:37.93.
Miss Code West paid a stingy $2.20 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. With Imamidnightspecial running second at 27-1 odds, the $2 exacta was worth $22.40. In fact, with longshots going bombs away throughout the card, the middle Pick 4 that ended with 1-9 Miss Code West, amazingly, returned $2,811.40. That Pick 4 included winners Drain the Shot (5-1), Killa Sally (10-1) and So Jacksann (26-1).
Eireann (3-1) was your third-place finisher in Friday’s Oklahoma Distaff Handicap, followed by Miss Code Red (34-1) fourth, Forbidden Lover (35-1) fifth and Sangria Sunset (27-1) sixth.
Miss Code West earned $66,600 for her efforts Friday and improved lifetime to 22 starts, 16 wins, and three seconds for a bankroll of $786,866. She is the current leading earner among active Oklahoma-breds.
