VETERAN JOCKEY LUIS QUINONEZ PUTS IN PATENTED CLOSING KICK WITH C W CHARM FOR SECOND STRAIGHT REMINGTON PARK VICTORY

For Immediate Release –  Oklahoma City, OK – September 5, 2024  – Remington Park’s second all-time winningest jockey Luis Quinonez put on his patented closing kick to win the allowance feature on the grass Thursday night with C W Charm. It was his second straight score on the filly for co-leading owner Bryan Hawk.

Quinonez has now been on C W Charm twice in the 3-year-old filly’s career and won both times for trainer Juan Padilla. Those were her last two races, both on the grass, both at 7-1/2 furlongs and both at Remington Park. She was sent off as the second wagering favorite at 8-5 odds and Quinonez had her revved up for that late move from the back of the pack to blow past front-runner Maybe Dolcie in late stretch for the victory.

C W Charm, a daughter of Code West (Lemon Drop Kid), out of the Hard Spun mare Mystical Charm, races for Hawk of Shawnee, Okla. It was the owners the sixth win this meet, tying him for first with owner-trainer Dick Cappellucci. Hawk also bred C W Charm in Oklahoma.

C W Charm had won her fall debut at Remington Park in maiden company on the grass at the same distance with the same near-last to first run in that race on Aug. 22. She was in 10th place, 10 lengths back after half of that win and still came flying to earn a trip to the winner’s circle under Quinonez at 3-1. Despite facing winners for the first time, C W Charm was a popular bet, just behind 4-5 favorite Glory O.

On Thursday night, it wasn’t as drastic a move because she only raced in a seven-horse field. Still, she had only one horse beaten down the backstretch, about 10 lengths back of the leaders. After a half-mile C W Charm had moved up to within four lengths of the pacesetters, but was now only four lengths behind. At the top of the stretch, she was rolling in second, one length from Maybe Dolcie, but Quinonez had no worries. He once again had measured it perfectly and drew off to win by 1-3/4 lengths at the wire.

C W Charm paid $5.40 to win, $3.40 to place and $2.20 to show. She earned $20,898 from the $35,000 purse and improved to five starts, two wins and one third for earnings of $45,546. The filly remained undefeated at Remington Park. She cut this victory into a pace of :24.96 for the first quarter-mile, :49.38 for the half-mile before C W Charm stopped the timer in 1:33.96 over the firm course. Third-place finisher Glory O set the interior fractions.

Quinonez trails only Cliff Berry in the all-time wins category at Remington Park with 1,482 victories. Berry retired with 2,125 local triumphs.
